Police on Monday afternoon fired tear gas shells at Jamal in Kathmandu to disperse the agitating protesters of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP). The RPP supporters had reached Jamal to picket the Election Commission (EC)’s office against the constitutional body’s decision to delete ‘constitutional monarchy’ and ‘Hindu state’ from party statute. It has been learnt that the police lobbed the tear gas shells after the RPP supporters tried to breach the police barricade. The EC on Friday had decided to remove some sections from the RPP statute claiming that the portions contradicted constitutional provisions of republican order and secularism. Following the EC’s decision, the party on Saturday had decided to move the Supreme Court against the EC’s decision to erase some sections of the statute. The RPP on Sunday had registered a constituent amendment proposal at the Parliament Secretariat against the EC’s decision.RPP Chairman Kamal Thapa had also warned that his party would take to the streets by quitting the government if the EC failed to roll back its decision to remove “constitutional monarchy” and “Hindu state” from the statute.
